A Good Day Takes IRC Overall at the Penghu Regatta 2026

From 26 June to 2 July, the fourteenth Penghu Regatta brought 18 boats and more than 200 sailors from nine countries and regions to Magong. The opening day started in driving rain — and for once, we were not watching from the dock.

Racing in the Rain

The series ran the full menu of Penghu sailing: the Penghu Bay In-port buoy races and the Penghu Round the Island Race, the long course out around Hujing Island. We raced in the IRC division. The first days brought grey skies, rain and shifty breeze.

Neck and Neck with Freybe One

Through the In-port races one rival kept showing up next to us on the scoreboard: Freybe One. Race after race the points stayed level, and by the time the fleet lined up for the Round the Island Race, the series had become a two-boat question. Whoever beat the other around the islands would take the championship.

Twenty-Nine Seconds

Three miles from the finish of the Penghu Round the Island Race, we were steering 300 degrees with the true wind quietly building, the TWS readout flickering between 19 and 22 knots. The freshening breeze felt like it had come to carry us home — as if the wind itself were quietly telling us we were going to win. After the better part of a day at sea, we crossed the finish line just 29 seconds ahead of Freybe One — boat against boat, on elapsed time, less than half a minute in it.

That result decided the tie. A Good Day took the IRC overall championship of the Penghu Regatta 2026 — and with it the Swan Island Race trophy. At the prizegiving, the IRC Overall championship award came from the hands of international race officer Simon James — one of the key figures of regatta racing across Asia, and the man whose race management kept a hard-fought week fair to the last second. The Swan Island Race trophy, a silver plate, was presented to us by Nautor Swan themselves.
